Okay, here is my sharing about how I tried to make a high imitation Rolex GMT-Master II with a Pepsi bezel, hope you guys enjoy it.

So, I’ve been wanting a Rolex GMT-Master II with that classic Pepsi bezel for a while now. I mean, who wouldn’t? It’s a freaking gorgeous watch. But, you know, the price tag is a little bit… out of my league. I saw some online stores selling them for crazy prices. I thought, no way I’m paying that much! So, I decided to try and make one myself, a high-quality imitation, you know?

First, I did some digging online. There are tons of websites talking about imitation learning and reward learning. I stumbled upon some stuff about “imitation” and reward learning algorithms and started to read them. I thought it might be helpful, but honestly, it was way over my head. Then I found some research paper called “PLUTO: Push the Limit of Imitation Learning-based Planning for Autonomous Driving” by some guys named Jie Cheng and Yingbing Chen. I thought it was about watches, but it turned out to be about self-driving cars. And also, some other stuff about how to train models with some data or something… I didn’t really understand it, but it seemed like a big deal.

Then I hit a few forums where people were talking about making their own high-quality imitation watches. They were throwing around terms like “clean implementations,” “PyTorch,” and “reward learning algorithms.” I tried to understand, really I did. There were some guys talking about some open-source libraries, I remember one of them was called “HumanCompatibleAI,” which provides many reward and imitation learning algorithms. I think I could use them to make my watch. But it was all too complicated for me. It was all very confusing, you know? Like trying to read a manual for assembling a spaceship, when all I wanted to do was build a little model airplane.

I kept searching, looking for easier ways, simpler instructions. I found some tutorials, but they were all about software and programming, not really about making physical things like watches. I found some website talking about how to “Push the Limit” or “simple baseline model.” Seemed cool, but not what I was looking for.

So, I decided to just go for it. I figured, how hard could it be? I ordered some parts online – a basic watch movement, a case that looked kind of like the Rolex, and a red and blue bezel insert. I was ready to get my hands dirty.

  • First, I took apart the original watch I bought. It was a cheap one, but it had the basic parts I needed.
  • Then, I tried to fit the new bezel onto the case. It wasn’t a perfect fit, but I managed to get it on there with a little bit of force and some glue.
  • Next, I swapped out the original watch hands for some that looked more like the ones on the real GMT-Master II. This was tricky, but I got it done eventually.
  • Finally, I put the whole thing back together. I had to adjust a few things, but in the end, it actually looked pretty good!

It wasn’t perfect, of course. It didn’t have all the fancy features of the real Rolex. And it probably wouldn’t fool a watch expert. But you know what? It looked pretty darn close to the real thing, at least to my untrained eye. And I made it myself, which felt pretty awesome. But also it took me weeks to finish this. I mean, I did this during my spare time, you know, after work. But still, it’s a very long journey.

In the end, I learned a lot about watches, and about myself. It was really an interesting experience. I might not have a real Rolex on my wrist, but I have something I’m proud of. I realized that I don’t need the most expensive things to be happy. Sometimes, the things you make yourself are even more valuable. So, would I recommend doing this? It is a hard question, maybe not. It took too much time and effort. But the experience was fun, at least for me. So, think twice if you really want to do this.

Thanks for listening to my little project story! Hope this was a fun read. I might try to modify my watch again, you know, maybe in a few years. It was a nice try. Now it’s time to do something else, I guess.
