So, I got this idea to try and remake a Patek Philippe Gondolo, specifically the 4962/200R-001 model. I know, it sounds crazy, right? But I was itching for a new project, and I thought, why not give it a shot? Plus, I wanted to see if I could actually pull it off.
First things first, I spent hours just staring at pictures of the watch online. I mean, really studying every little detail. The shape of the case, the way the diamonds are set, the design of the dial – everything. I needed to get a feel for the watch before I could even think about recreating it.
Next, I started sketching. I’m no artist, but I doodled my best to capture the watch’s design on paper. This helped me visualize the different parts I needed to create and how they would all fit together. It also gave me a roadmap to follow as I moved forward.
Then came the fun part – actually making the watch! I ordered a bunch of watch parts online from different places, like the case, the movement, the dial, and even those tiny diamonds. It took some time to gather everything, but finally, I had all the pieces in front of me. But this was the most difficult step, and I knew it wouldn’t be easy. I spent more than half a month trying to find a movement that fit my expectations and the case. I thought I could use some cheap alternative, but all in all, I could not find a movement with a small size and reliable quality.
Assembling the watch was a real test of patience. I used tweezers, tiny screwdrivers, and a magnifying glass to put all the parts together. Let me tell you, those screws are smaller than ants! It was nerve-wracking, but I took it slow, one step at a time.
Setting the diamonds was probably the trickiest part. I had to be super careful not to scratch the case or damage the stones. It took a lot of concentration and a steady hand, but I eventually managed to get them all in place. They were not real diamonds of course, so the hardest part was how to secure them properly.
Finally, after what felt like forever, I was done. I had actually made a watch that looked pretty darn close to the Patek Philippe Gondolo 4962/200R-001. It wasn’t perfect, but I was proud of myself for pulling it off. I mean, who would have thought I could make something like this from scratch?
The Results
- Sense of Accomplishment: I can’t even describe the feeling of accomplishment I had after finishing this project. It was amazing to see something I had created with my own two hands come to life.
- New Skills: This project forced me to learn a lot about watchmaking. I picked up new skills like setting stones, assembling movements, and working with tiny tools. It was a great learning experience.
- Unique Timepiece: Now I have a unique watch that’s unlike anything else out there. It’s a conversation starter, and I love telling people the story behind it. It’s just for show-off, of course. I don’t wear it.
