Alright, folks, gather ’round, let me tell you about this little project I’ve been working on. So, I’ve always been a bit of a watch guy, right? And the Patek Philippe Calatrava, especially the 6119G-001, has always been a dream. But, you know, those things are crazy expensive! So, I thought, why not try to remake one myself? A little ambitious, maybe, but hey, what’s life without a challenge?
First thing I did was to stare at a bunch of pictures online of this 6119G-001, that charcoal gray dial, and the white gold case. This model is a remake of an old favorite, and man, it is a beauty. They say it’s 39mm, 18k white gold, the whole shebang. I managed to find quite a lot online about it, especially the Ref: 6119G-001, some even say it’s a good investment, like buying land, but who knows. Some say it’s not a good investment. Those Patek Philippe’s, they are fancy, and this one, it’s just somethin’ else.
Then I tried to look for something similar, like a white gold case, because getting the real deal, that is tough. Rolex and Patek Philippe are hard to get because everyone wants them, and they don’t make a lot of them. So I grabbed what I could find that looked somewhat similar. Not perfect, but it’ll do for this project.
Next up, the dial. This one’s tricky. The original has this “Clous de Paris” pattern, it is pretty, but getting that right? Whew, that was a headache. I went through a bunch of materials, tried a few different techniques, and finally landed on something that looks kinda like it. It’s not exact, but it’s got that vibe, you know?
The movement, oh boy, the movement. The original has a hand-wound mechanical movement. Now, I am no watchmaker, so I had to get creative. I took apart an old watch I had lying around, studied how it worked, and tried to replicate the look, at least. I spent hours, no, days, tinkering with these tiny parts. My eyes were crossing, my fingers were sore, but I got it to a point where it resembles the original. Not exactly, but I did what I could.
- Sourcing the Case: I looked everywhere for a white gold case that looked like the 6119G-001.
- Dial Design: Tried to copy that “Clous de Paris” pattern. That was tough.
- Movement: Took apart an old watch and tried to make it look like the original’s movement.
Finally, after many hours, I put it all together. And you know what? It doesn’t look half bad! It is not a Patek Philippe, that’s for sure. But for a homemade job, I am pretty proud of it. It has the look, the feel, and it tells the time. What more could you ask for?
So, that’s my story of remaking the Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119G-001. It was a fun project, a real test of patience and creativity. And who knows, maybe one day I will get my hands on the real deal. Until then, I’ve got this little guy to remind me that sometimes, it’s the journey, not the destination, that counts.
